Broker Remarks

The Moody 44, designed by the renowned naval architect Bill Dixon, was produced by Marine Projects (Plymouth) Limited and ran from 1991 to 1996. The 1996 model represents one of the final iterations of this highly regarded center cockpit design. It is universally praised as a robust, capable, and comfortable cruising yacht, earning its reputation as a true blue-water passagemaker.

Design and Construction Philosophy

The Moody 44 was built to satisfy the demand for a serious offshore cruiser with an emphasis on comfort and safety.

  • Center Cockpit Advantage: The defining feature is the deep, secure center cockpit, which offers exceptional protection from the elements—a key factor for long-distance sailing. This design also allows for a magnificent, full-beam aft owner’s stateroom below.
  • Robust Hull: The hull is constructed from GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic), typically with a solid fiberglass bottom and a balsa-cored topsides for stiffness and insulation. Its moderate displacement (around 10,700 kg) means it can carry a significant amount of stores and equipment without sacrificing performance.
  • Underbody: The boat features a reliable fin keel and a strong, skeg-hung rudder. This configuration offers excellent directional stability and protects the rudder from impact, reinforcing its blue-water credentials. Its favorable Capsize Screening Formula (CSF) of less than 2.0 confirms its suitability for ocean passages (CE Category A).

Sailing Performance and Handling

While not a stripped-out racer, the Moody 44 offers a very satisfactory balance of speed and comfort under sail.

  • Motion and Comfort: Thanks to its moderate displacement and deep-vee sections forward, the 44 provides a comfortable and predictable motion in a seaway. Owners frequently describe the boat as steady and confidence-inspiring, particularly when the wind pipes up.
  • Sail Plan: Rigged as a masthead sloop, the boat comes with furling systems for both the genoa and the main. This makes the sail plan incredibly easy to manage, allowing the boat to be safely handled by a couple or even a single sailor.
  • Maneuverability: With a length overall (LOA of 13.10 metres (43 ft), the boat is substantial, but its deck layout is intelligently planned, with control lines often led aft to the cockpit, simplifying tacks and reefs.

Accommodation: A Liveaboard Dream

The interior of the Moody 44 is where it truly shines, reflecting the British tradition of quality teak joinery and thoughtful layouts.

  • Aft Owner's Stateroom: This is the jewel of the design. Situated beneath the center cockpit, the cabin is spacious, typically featuring a large central double berth, a settee, a dressing table, and ample storage, complete with an en-suite head and separate shower.
  • Saloon and Galley: The main saloon is arranged with a large C-shaped settee and dining table to port, complemented by two comfortable easy chairs to starboard. The adjacent galley is highly practical, running down the starboard passage to the aft cabin. It is well-equipped with generous counter space, deep sinks, and includes large, keel-cooled refrigeration/freezer units—a significant benefit for extended cruising.
  • Forward Cabins: The forward section offers a V-berth double and a separate bunk cabin, along with a second day-head/shower access.
