Over the years she has benefited from a number of careful owners who have clearly kept her well maintained and updated. Icon is one of David Hillyard’s many heavy displacement cruising yachts. The structure has survived its 60 years very well. Upgrading/refitting has been carried out in the recent past, including new standing rigging, caulking and paying of lower hull seams, plus rebuilding the engine. Lying Conwy, North Wales

Accommodation

Built to an open plan layout and consists of 4 generous berths in two cabins, main saloon, galley and navigation station, with two doors leading forward to the heads. The aft cabin is accessible from the cockpit and has removable sole boards.

From forward, she has Heads with Baby Blake toilet, wash basin with H&C pressurised water and shower attachment, plus ample storage for sailing gear etc.

Separated from the heads by 2 doors, the Saloon has 2 x single berths/sofas with drop down central table. Water is stored in 2 x 18 gallon galvanised tanks under main saloon berths feeding pumped water to galley, heads and calorifier (20L) which provides pumped hot water to galley and heads.

Single step up to port Galley and starboard Navigation table. Galley furnished with a Smev (new in 2010) calor gas 2 burner cooker with oven and grill. Stainless sink with H&C pressurised water and foot pumped fresh water. Good storage in cupboards and ample food prep surfaces.

The stand at Chart Table will take a full sized chart and at the aft end is a cool box, draws and cupboards underneath.

Two steps out through sliding door to Centre Cockpit, which is self draining and has a forward facing wheel. Gas locker and storage under port and starboard seats.

Step down through hatch to Aft Cabin, which has a double berth and hanging locker, it is a compact cabin but very functional. The interior throughout is largely original or carefully updated. Many people describe her as the “country cottage of the boat world.”

Of traditional timber construction. The carvel laid mahogany planking is copper clench fastened to steam bent oak timbers (ribs) and screwed to the sawn oak frames, oak floors and the oak centreline. There are pitch pine (or similar) topside and bilge stringers, and a pine beamshelf. The topsides are painted in white enamel with a blue boottop line; the bottom is finished in red antifouling. The hardwood rubbing strake is painted dark blue.

The round bilge hull has a spoon bow, long keel and a canoe stern. The superstructure consists of the fore, side and aft decks, the forward and after coachroofs, the doghouse and the centre cockpit. The rig is masthead bermudan sloop set on a deck-stepped mast. The auxiliary engine is installed beneath the cockpit and drives conventional stern gear.

Mechanical & Electrical:

Icon’s engine was replaced in the 1980’s by a Mercedes 36hp OM636 Diesel and was professionally rebuilt for her present owner in 2012.
