The MCA conducted a full hull ultrasound survey in June 2016.
Since the completion of her refit Western Star has been involved commercially in ornithological scientific survey work, guard boat duties and tourism. She was also used on a long term charter bringing guests from Liverpool via France, Portugal and Morocco to Barcelona, where she is currently berthed.
All the work undertaken has been inspected by a representative of the MCA (Maritime Coastguard Agency) and the vessel awarded a class 2 commercial coding which is also compliant with the UK national legislation implementing the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006. Thereby enabling Western Star to operate commercially in non-British waters.
The Western Star has undergone a major transformation but has none the less maintained all the toughness, strength and sea keeping capabilities that were essential to her during her fishing years. Her main fish and ice hold has been converted to accommodate 8 clients, guests, friends or family in comfort. The crew’s quarters which originally slept 4 has now been converted to accommodate 2 with en-suite shower and toilet facilities. In total, there are four toilets aboard and three showers.
In addition, Western Star has been used as a filming platform for a television documentary and as a dive boat. Her large clear decks and a low free board together with her ability to remain over a dive site for extended periods make her most suitable for this purpose.
With a fully equipped galley including cooker, oven hob extractor, 2 fridges, 2 freezers, washing machine, dishwasher and microwave all operating from a 24kva generator at 240volts, living on board is like a home from home. Engine To date (3rd of August 2018) the main engine is a Caterpillar 3406B and has only run for a total of 7,047 hours since it was installed new in 1999.
The on board generator comprises of a Deutz engine TD2009L04 with a Newage Stamford alternator providing 22.7kVA/kW Prime – Single Phase, 230V, 50Hz, 1500rpm, 1.0pf. This generator was purchased new from AJ Powers and installed in 2010.
Fuel Consumption at 9knots (i.e.1500revs) = 43litres/hour costing £0.70 per litre, therefore ful costs per hour at 9 knots is £30.10
Fuel Consumption at 6knots (i.e.1000revs) = 29litres/hour costing £0.70 per litre, therefore ful costs per hour at 6 knots is £20.30
Fuel Capacity 6,000 litres tank using 43ltrs/hr gives a steaming capacity of 140 hrs or 5.8 days.
