Broker Remarks

Owners Remarks:
This vessel was built in 1968 by Richard Roscoe of Poole a naval architect and craftsman boat builder.
It was built of cold moulded mahogany, three layers copper pinned and glued, making an extremely strong monocoque hull.
He sailed in the Fastnet, then sold to a couple from Menai, they raced her for many years, in the nineties they sold it to Mr and Mrs Shirley of Anglesey, the boat had been overhauled with new mast sails and rigging.
The Shirley's fitted a 30hp Perkins Parama and three blade prop. They didn't intend to race and wanted the ability to run home if the conditions deteriorated in the Irish Sea.
I saw the boat for sale in 2010. I travelled to Y Felinelli near to Bangor in North Wales. Mrs Shirley had broken her hip and Mr Shirley had suffered a stroke. Solitaire had been under cover for three years. Because of their age and Mr Shirley's continuing ill health they had decided to sell. They loved the boat and wanted to see her back in the water.
My son and I couldn't believe that such a beautiful yacht hadn't been snapped up. I offered the asking price, became the fourth owner.
Mrs Shirley told me that Solitaire would always look after me, just leave go of the tiller and she will turn into wind.
Mr Shirley said that, you never own this yacht, you just have the honour of being her custodian for a while.
My first voyage was in Menai through the Swellies, but all went well and I made that journey many times.
For four years I sailed to Portpatrick in Scotland and sailed around the Hebrides and the coast of Northern Ireland with family and friends. I often single handed from Wales to Scotland and back.
I have been caught in a force eight in the Irish Sea, doing 14 knots down big breakers, Solitaire was designed for the Fastnet and has always kept me safe.
She has very little freeboard, but never takes a drop. She sails closer to the wind than any boat I know.
Why am I selling, two years ago I met a lady in Plymouth, I married her and live in Plymouth, she loves the boat, but is no sailor, a sunny day with just the working jib up and a glass of wine is perfect. Me, Give me a wind with genoa and main doing seven knots heeling at thirty degrees.
This is a sailors boat, not a caravan, she needs to feel the sea again.
Richard Roscoe has won the Fastnet in a self built catamaran and is a legend in Fastnet history, he died this year aged 84.
l am happy to answer any questions that a prospective purchaser may have.
The yacht has its own trailer/cradle here in Plymouth.
